The Secret Lives
From my own personal experiences and observations, throughout North America, Middle East, Northern Africa, the Mediterranean, Europe and within the U.S.A., including Hawaii), chickens left to their own, prefer to forage for decaying organic matter, meat, live insects, grubs, bugs, larvae and other decomposing organic matter, "not foraging for blades of grass".
Chickens that still have their natural instincts in-tact, continue to forage as their ancestors did. And since having originated from game birds in the rain forests and jungles, chickens (in nature) did not have access to naturally occurring pasture-land, grazing green acres or even similar. Therefore it is important to make sense when discussing the natural cultural behaviors of animals.
A chicken is only as nutritious as what it absorbs (not what it eats).
A nutritious chicken is a healthy chicken. One that has a superior immune system, excellent muscle tone and a supportive nervous system. Those qualities stem from their lifestyle, culture, their environment and dietary selections. A lifestyle conducive to their biological design and digestive and nutritive requirements.
Not All Pasture-Raised, Free-Range or Foraged Chicken is the Same.
Rainbow Ranch Farms is very unique in that the main focus is on nutrient-density (from start to finish). Producing the cleanest, physio-organic medicinal food while preserving old fashioned farming traditions that benefit the ecological system and the environment. Rainbow Ranch Farms best tasting, highly nutritious, fresh poultry is known for being unmatched and second-to-none.
Our chickens are heritage breeds, some rare and others considered endangered. Raised with no vaccines, no antimicrobials, no antibiotics, no anti-parasiticals and processed without toxic microbe-inhibiting chemicals.
There is no alternative that comes anywhere close to the cleanliness, allergen-free, medicinal quality and nutritional density that can compare.
Rainbow Ranch Farms farmers and ranchers understand and respect nature, practice animal culture methodologies, appreciate old fashioned farming traditions, adhere to species-specific fodder systems and we care about individual dietary needs. We consider nutritional density and food-related sensitivities a critical matter in need of attention.
The Opportunistic Vulture
Our heritage chickens are opportunistic vultures. They fill their crop with sand, dirt & small pebbles to help grind the foods they consume. They have a gizzard which also mashes their food. Sometimes they will stuff their crop full and save food for later. They have sharp beaks, sharp nails and they fly. They have one multipurpose exit vent (for droppings, egg laying and breeding).
Our chickens do not have a rumen, and do not chew cud. I know, because I have butchered thousands. Rest assured, our chickens do not have a rumen.
Although they forage in the native Desert, hunt in our gardens, range on the farm with free-rein of the ranch, they are not pasture nor grazing animals. These are omnivore birds that prefer the hunt for small rodents and lizards. They scratch through the cow patties hunting for beetles, flies and dig for worms, grubs, bugs and they dig deep molting pits. They roost up high, lay eggs all over the place, and spend most of the day scratching in the compost piles and the decomposing organic mulch piles.
Our chickens are sustainable, not because of anything that we do, but because they have evolved, to their natural indigenous culture.
The most nutritious poultry is derived from free-ranging heritage breed chickens, which thrive on a diet comprised of at least 75% animal protein and 25% native and local vegetation-forage.
