The seasonal heritage chickens that forage at RRF can get pretty big. Well, by heritage breed standards, anyway. You can expect your winter chicken to be wild foraged on open range and, generally, weigh from 3.5-5.0 lbs. Just perfect! You can expect slightly more fat on the winter chickens.
Winter, heritage chickens are available in December, January and, February. During the colder months, the pasture is drying out, the leaves have fallen from the trees and, seeds are scarce. Winter chickens rely heavily on cold season berries, cold hardy vegetables and, greens. During the winter they follow the cattle, sheep and, goats as, they often eat some of the grasses left behind. In addition, they thrive on wild, native forage and, lots of worms, bugs, grubs and, small insects from, our vermiculture beds. When it gets below freezing and, the snow is blanketing the ground, we butcher a whole lamb or, goat for the winter chickens. And, in less than 1 week, it's just BONES! it's incredible. They love RRF organic, grass-fed meat.
I suppose that makes a lot sense since, worms, grubs and, small critters are meat too! Winter chickens are available in, December, January and, February.
